I was not born a citizen of United States of America. No, I chose to become one. I could have remained a Displaced Person. Even though I came to this country as a baby, my parents did not elect to become citizens. Had they done so before I was 18 I too would have become a citizen along with them. Instead I was pass the age of 21 and clearly an adult when I made my choice to became one.
History to me was required and dumb. Of what use is it to know how Germany became a thorn in the side of the world? Who cares how our great nation was born? Why are two continents named after a map maker? None of that seemed relevant as I was growing up and going to school. Only Math, English, and Science had my intense attention. But I did notice a tendency of people to freely give up their rights. It kept dwelling at the back of my mind that it is our duty to remind one another of our rights and not let anyone stomp on them again.
“Anarchism says, Make no laws whatever concerning speech, and speech will be free; so soon as you make a declaration on paper that speech shall be free, you will have a hundred lawyers proving that "freedom does not mean abuse, nor liberty license"; and they will define and define freedom out of existence. Let the guarantee of free speech be in every man’s determination to use it, and we shall have no need of paper declarations. On the other hand, so long as the people do not care to exercise their freedom, those who wish to tyrannize will do so; for tyrants are active and ardent, and will devote themselves in the name of any number of gods, religious and otherwise, to put shackles upon sleeping men. ”
So says Voltairine de Cleyre who I did not know of until today. But on the Dave Champion site there was a notice and I went to his facebook page to see if there was any comment on it. Instead I found this disturbing bit of news. My heart weeps and if only I could have known this future and all the steps that have lead us here, my decision to become citizen would have never happened. What world is this where communist are more free in China than we the people of the United States? That day has come and now we look at each other asking,“What Freedom?”!
